So, this afternoon I ripped the drainpipe off the side of my house.
Did it with my bare hands too!
Hoping to impress anyone watching…
“Anyone?” … “ANYONE!?” … “hmph!”
It wasn’t because I have a thing against downpipes… usually.
But here I am… eyeballing the prime suspect in the case of: “Why are our living room walls dripping when there’s heavy rain?”
The drainpipe looked all fine on the outside. But outward appearances can be deceiving.
Now… we’ve got a lovely art-deco style house. But I think the architects of the era were absent from class the day they taught about sensible guttering systems.
Our house has this stoopid central gutter running right down the middle.
WHAT ON EARTH WERE THEY THINKING?!?
I’ve already done some waterproofing down its length.
But the problem… which I confirmed when I pulled the downpipe off the side… was cracking in the stucco behind the drain. Splashes were jumping into them when there was lots of water gushing into the pipe.
That’s all fine to deal with. I can seal that up easily enough.
And hopefully figure out how to reattach the drainpipe 🤔
But something I didn’t expect…
When I was climbing down the ladder I noticed a crack in the wooden windowsill that was close to the pipe.
After my experience at the other end of the house… with water dripping on that windowsill and rotting it out… I knew investigation was in order.
So I poked and prodded a bit with my chisel…
And this turned into whipping out the power tools and hacking a big chunk out of the windowsill.
I removed a lot of dry rot.
The drain had in fact been splashing water onto the sill. And it was seeping into this crack… ugh!
Fortunately I have just enough skill to know how to replace the wood. Patch up with filler. And paint.
So… should be good🤞
Now…
There’s probably an epic metaphor in this episode for something in your freelancing business.
Perhaps about something that might look good on the outside… but needs attention on the inside.
