Could this be your new favorite writing app?

I’m in love. 🥰

Maybe it’s just a little crush. I dunno.

But if you’re a writer I think you’ll LOVE this one too.

In Justin Blackman’s email today I discovered a link to his own app, Verbatim.

It’s like everyone’s favorite readability assessor, Hemmingway… but AWESOMER

In my humble but correct opinion.

So…

With a twinge of trepidation I pasted in my email from yesterday.

It clocked in at a respectable grade level of 3.74.

Our impartial adjudicator, Hemingway, confirms: “4”.

Niiice! 😁

I spun the wheel to pick my next “willing” victim.

Grade 2!

A subtle nod from Hemmingway.

Back to yesterday’s email…

Both Verbatim and Hemmingway are great at pointing out my adverb word crimes

Seems I just like “just”… because it’s just the best just in the just just just.

So Chris… let me get this straight…

You’re getting all excited because this fandagled new app is giving the EXACT SAME SCORES as Hemmingway.

Although Hemmingway at least has the common courtesy to round the scores to the nearest “nice” number?

What gives?

Patience my friend. We’re coming up to the “But wait… there’s more” bit.

You see:

Not only is there readability scoring and highlighting long sentences and whatnot…

But if you lust for more…

There’s PLENTY more.

Take the “Tone & Sentiment” score.

98% positive. Well, thank you very muchly!

“Vocabulary” stats. Showing “you” vs “me” words”, average word length, and a graph showing the distribution of word lengths.

Not to forget the “Cadence” section. Measuring what they call “the rhythm of your writing.”

My “me” words are twice the “you” words.

Oh well. This ain’t no sales letter where it’s all about the “you”.

Because I might just—

There’s that blimmin’ “just” again!

Ahem…

I might ~~just~~ have to say “I” or “Me” a few times when telling a story about what’s happening in MY life. So I’m not letting its vocabulary score take a sledgehammer to my dreams.

And the MOST AWESOME feature is:

You can compare two texts side-by-side so you can easily see how your edits improve (or not) the readability, cadence etc.

Pretty cool, no?

Yeah, sure you can do some acrobatics with Hemingway browser windows. But this is… smoother.

Whether you’re excited as me or not…

I still think it’s the best thing since sliced cantaloupe

It’s still a beta-testing kinda thing. But immensely useful already.

Not good for editing in. Since a page refresh will lose everything.

But good for taking my writing’s temperature. Maybe every now and again. That’s how I’m going to use it.

I’m excited to see how it develops.

Have a great day… or evening… or whatever time of the day it is for you.

Chris “~~just~~ lovin’ Verbatim” Milham

P.S. Grade 2.51 today. And cranking out a 99% positive tone — with “optimism” too. Woot!

P.P.S Glad it had nothing to say about my excessive use of “…”. Must mean it’s OK then. 😅

P.P.P.S Thinking of my own “word crimes” made me think of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Gv0H-vPoDc

Enjoy. But don’t let it derail your productivity today. Save it for a break! 😉
