A geek’s geek

Dave Plummer isn’t a household name (but should be!).

But to many in the computing world: he’s it.

A geek’s geek.

Landing his career with Microsoft in the early 90’s. And having key involvement in the development of Windows NT. Which evolved over 27 years through XP, Vista (blerk!), 7, 10, and 11.

Hosting his own YouTube channel nowadays. And having the occasional guest role on various podcasts.

I just heard him speak today.

He talked about the venerable “Task Manager”. Which remains a core part of Windows. Allowing you to monitor processes, watch performance, and kill things that are misbehaving.

Die! Die! Die! 💀

Ahem!…

Plummer wrote this program at home — off the clock. Simply because it was helpful to him and the projects he was working on for his side hustle.

He shared it with a couple of people at work because he saw it could be helpful for their tasks too.

Before he knew it…

Everyone was using his cool new tool.

By the time it ended up installed on his boss’s computer the deal was practically sealed that would determine its destiny.

It was shipped with the soon-to-be-legendary Windows NT 4.0.

One man’s little side project was installed on hundreds of millions of computers world-wide — helping many more people than his original handful of geeky coder workmates.

Turning to freelancing…

When you gain an insight. Or hear about a new tool. Or try something new for yourself…

You too can have a “beyond your own world” impact.

Like Dave’s modest tool.

I know I’ve appreciated when freelancing friends have done a training course. And then shared their key insights.

I might not have have the same depth of opportunity to improve my skills. But I’ve picked up a few helpful things. Plus it’s given me lampposts if I want to follow them sometime in the future.

And it’s always interesting to hear how people are using things like software to make their freelancing lives easier.

If you learn new things. Figure out stuff for yourself. Even write your own “Task Manager”. Sharing can consolidate what you know and help others to grow as freelancers.

Sharing is caring.🤗

That’s why I’ll be sharing from time-to-time about things that helped me.

Maybe you can discover a thing or two that might help you too. Maybe there’s a tool or technique that can help you get ahead faster.
