An interesting email

Wow!… Sunday has rolled around fast!

So that means it’s… mailbag time!

Scooping out the question for today… this one comes in via LinkedIn.

I already replied to this person. But little did they know their innocous question and my answer would become the subject of this email. Hehe.

Well… that is… until I told them.

BUUUT…

Little did they know what the rest of this email would turn out like.

So there’s some surprises left… I guess. 🤔

Here’s the Q&A:

I’m fascinated by your daily email approach. Writing an email every day is pretty daunting. How do you make them interesting every single day?

Dawn Ting

Great question, Dawn!

So… I collect a lot of stories etc from my day and things I come across. So I have a pool to pick a story or topic out of.

I take the infotainment approach (or am trying to) so it may be that the story isn’t really anything to do with the tip or product I pivot to.

But that’s OK. The point with them is gradually building a relationship… and can be likened to a daily talk radio segment.

And yes… I do have times when I stare at the screen wondering what to write.

But I’ve found… for me… the key is knowing my own rhythms.

And because I am literally writing a new one most days (I’ve not done much batching) I have to ensure I get it done in the morning — when my brain is functioning!

Last thing: It’s a great way to do the “write every day” thing we’re told to do. My writing is coming along in leaps and bounds 😄

Much more I could say…

There you go.

One thing I didn’t mention in my answer is that I’m also part of the audience my emails are going out to.

So because I’m hitting tips and topics that may have some relevance to freelancers like us… it can help raise the mercury in the “interesting” thermometer.

And as I indicated:

Daily email is a great way to improve your writing. Helping you write and edit faster.

Which are great skills to improve as a freelance business owner… even if you’re not a writer as such.

Now, I know “interesting” is in the eye of the beholder 👀

So you can decide for yourself just how you’re “beholding” my emails. Like this one.

Interesting enough for you?

My approach to daily emails is simple. But you know what they say about simple, right?

“Simple ain’t always easy.”

But writing daily email IS fun.

Maybe you want to give it a try 😉.

Or maybe just start with one a week.

But oh my gawsh!… getting emails set up to send can be a downright pain if you’re using a system that’s not well-designed for high volumes.

For example… I use Klaviyo for client emails.

And their million-clicks-to-do-anything policy gave me cold sweats every time I even entertained the idea of sending daily emails using it.

I did use it for the first email list I started when I was sending two emails a week. And that was — how can I say politely? — NOT FUN!

(And don’t even ask about the 18-email Black Friday campaign I’m currently setting up 😖)

It’s why… although it isn’t the free or cheapest option… I choose to run my email list using BerserkerMail.

I took a long, hard squint into the future… and figured the time saved by using it would pay off.

And because it’s built and used by marketers who email daily themselves… not by programmers who think they know how marketing works… that made it a solid long-term choice for me.

It’s probably not for everyone. Reason being: they enforce a no-images policy. So if you can’t live without emailing gifs and a million photos… better look elsewhere.

And they don’t just do stuff like this to be contrarian. Everything in BerserkerMail comes back to email deliverability.
