I’m sitting here at my laptop for a “productivity” session.
And… nothing.
What? Why? How?
Quiet space… check!
Time scheduled for writing… check!
Laptop out and ready to go… check!
But… nothing.
And no matter what I do, I just can’t kick my brain into gear.
In the past I’d have called this writer’s block. But now I know myself a little better. The yawn gives it away.
I’m just tired.
Brain has stalled. Needs a recharge.
Maybe it’s because I’m getting a bit older. Maybe it’s because I’ve started going for long walks in the morning and I conk out a couple of hours after I arrive home.
I suspect there’s still a lingering inability to focus for long periods since I crashed with burnout a couple of years back.
No matter the cause… I’ve learned that at times like this, pushing through just isn’t gonna work.
What will work is… tucking myself under a blanket on my rather-too-short-for-me (and I’m short!) leather two-seater in my office. And just taking some zees.
It doesn’t fit well with my default setting of just wanting to crack into things and be super-productive. But it’s what I have to do.
😴
And in 30 minutes I’m back like a spring-chicken… ready for the rest of my morning!
I wonder what your energy levels are like? And the patterns you have to follow to be productive?
We’re all different and have to find our own sweet spot for working productively.
I reckon it’s OK to give yourself permission to have a break.
It’s not being slack. It’s working to the best of your capabilities.
Sometimes I forget that. And try and push myself too hard.
But rest is a perfectly fine (and necessary) part of your day.
So long as it’s not what Steven Pressfield, author of The War of Art, calls an excuse for not doing your work.
Which reminds me about one thing I’m working on…
Well… maybe I should call it, “toying with.”
I’m thinking of putting together a workshop that brings together some of the basics of working with clients.
Covering questions like… “Should I niche?” And… “Where do I find clients?”
And also touching on mindset stuff that can hold us back from moving forward with clients.
