I waited… and I waited… and I waited.
Felt a bit of a “Chris no mates” for 20 minutes.
Suddenly:
“Surprise Chris!”
“Wh-what? Who’s there?” I said as I peered at my screen.
But I only saw myself staring back from the Zoom window.
“It’s me?”
“Ah… who’s that?”
“Your confidence, Chris,” the strange voice replied.
“My what?”
“Your CONFIDENCE!”
“Uh huh?” I said, my eyes darting around the room.
“No no no… stop looking… just LISTEN!”
“Uh… Okaay?”
“Chris. You just did a good thing. Organizing a meetup for other freelance writers. So what that no one arrived! People are busy. Life has other priorities. What matters is you gave them the opportunity.”
“Oh. I didn’t really think about it like that. I mean… I knew getting together can be encouraging and all. And we can make some new connections. But I guess someone has to make these opportunities. Otherwise nothing will ever happen.”
“Fast learner, son.”
“Uh… thanks?”
“And the other thing…”
“Other thing?”
“If you show people how easy it is to set up a place to meet and connect… maybe they’ll be inspired to give it a go for themselves.”
“I guess. I mean, all I really did was pick a time to meet, set up a Zoom meeting, and tell others about it.”
“That’s right. It’s not too hard to get the hang of. And plenty of other people can give that a go. It’s not all on you to try and be the grand-connector of all freelancer writers.”
“Yeah… yeah, you’re right. Hey thanks!”
“You are most welcome. And… bye for now.”
Just like that the voice is gone.
And just like that I feel like the negativity had been drained like an oil change. And the positivity topped right up to the line — ready for the next 7,000 miles.
Maybe… just maybe… I’ll try running a meetup another time.
And maybe… just maybe… someone else will be inspired to run one.
