One of the biggest fears of new freelancers is meeting with clients.
The fear can be very real — like a catawampus silently stalking them.
But you may find… sooner or later… you kinda have to meet one or two clients.
And… good news! They’re not THAT scary.
Heck! …
As so often is the case with wild animals….
They’re probably more scared of you, than you are of them!
(Did I just compare clients to wild animals? No. Can’t have. Didn’t mean to. You must be imagining it!)
And… want to know a little secret?
Well, come a little closer.
That’s it.
Closer.
Just a bit more.
The secret is:
Clients are human beings too! 🤫
Who knew?
My clients would confess to this (I think? 🤔)
And I’m sure yours will too.
This means…
They’ll appreciate you being helpful. Communicating clearly. And having a laugh.
They (usually) don’t expect perfection.
The best ones want you to take control and lead
Because they want YOUR know-how and can-do. They want YOU to be the expert.
And they’ll be super-appreciative when you go “above and beyond” for them.
Yeah… I know, I know… saying all this can get the anxiety levels off the charts again.
So the main thing I suggest is simply:
Treat clients the way you’d want to be treated
See yourself in their shoes. Flex your empathy muscle.
Remember you’re there to serve them.
And like Earl Nightingale — grandfather of personal development — says:
“Treat everyone with whom you come in contact as the most important person on earth.”
I reckon… taking this kind of approach means…
There will be no ~~catawampus~~ client you can’t face head-on
And if you want some guidance for working with clients. Even to get your first client project.
I offer coaching. And can help you make those steps. Just reply and ask.
