Don’t be boring

If ever there was a day I didn’t want to write a daily email… today’s been it.

It’s not you lovely people.

It’s not because I want to just chuck in the last 100 days because my imposter syndrome raised it’s 7 hydra heads.

It’s just the “balance” thing.

Like how managing a huge (for me) Black Friday campaign fits in.

Along with usual family life stuff.

And this morning’s fun “surprise” of needing to replace our car’s engine. And figuring out how to cope without it for a few weeks. (Also looking at the estimate: where’s an “eyes watering” emoji when you need it?).

Please don’t take this as a woe-is-me email.

It’s simply real-time life stuff.

It’s just that the energy that goes into these kind of things sometimes leaves me feeling lacking.

And when you’re writing a daily email on the actual day, well!

But on the very-cool plus side…

I started writing my first sales letter today. And what’s really great about it is… it’s for my best client: me!

And that can only mean one thing. But that’s one thing I’m not going to say any more about right now.

Hehe… c’mon… it’s only a little tease.

Just be thankful I didn’t go on for 26 pages first. 😉

I’ll come back to what it’s about in the coming weeks.

Now master email copywriter, Ben Settle, says to just go ahead and be an “obnoxious tease”.

His reason? People love it.

I can’t say I’m “people” in this regard… as I’m more of a “cut to the chase” kind of person.

But just because I’m like that doesn’t mean it won’t be enjoyed by others.

Now “enjoyed” is certainly a word to pick up on when writing copy.

If people are being entertained and enjoying reading… they will read pages and pages.

And we’re not talking about cracking constant jokes. You see… people can be entertained by reading things that interest them. Even things that come across as desert-dry to others.

It comes down to knowing your audience… being relevant… and writing for them.

So our big freelancing business owner tip-o-the-day… because most of us will probably have to write our own copy at some stage:

Write to be entertaining.

And its corollary: Don’t be boring.

You can do this easily by writing about things that interest your audience.

After starting off saying I found writing today’s email hard. I’ve arrived at the end of it.

And it’s actually been a jolly enjoyable affair. In fact it’s put a smile on my face.

Maybe I’m starting to get the hang of not being boring.

At least not for me.

But if you’re reading this line… then I guess: not for you either. 😎

See you tomorrow!
