I was prompted to send this email to you because…
I’m seeing SOOO MANY emails arrive in my inbox that don’t flow from the subject line into the lead of the email.
Instead there’s an almighty…
KER-CH-CH-CHUNK!!
As immediately they change gears and start saying something like…
“You’re getting this email because you signed up to my email list or signed up for a free offer at some time.”
And I’ve seen some that rabbit on for another sentence or two.
What that’s doing is breaking the flow from the subject line that led your reader into the email.
It’s introducing another topic.
What good will it do you, if they think, “I don’t remember signing up.” And that prompts them to unsubscribe there and then, without even reading the email they opened?
This kind of message has the whiff of “some guru said it so it, must be a good idea to include.”
But I’m not sure business owners have thought through the consequences.
If you have to remind your own subscribers why they’re getting your emails, then you’ve already lost.
How to not be forgettable, is simply a matter of showing up so often they won’t forget.
And by writing emails they want to read. Following the “Don’t Be Boring” rule.
But you probably won’t hear much talk about emailing more. Because everyone is living in such a state of neediness that they timidly show up once a week. With a “just in case you forgot me” message like this at the top of their email.
And they dare not email more in case they overwhelm their subscribers. And risk rejection from unsubscribes.
Most business owners have a genuine care for their customers. And want to do the best by them. To serve them well.
You serve by being there for your customers.
By showing up.
So, by timidly holding back, you miss out on building even stronger relationships. Of serving your subscribers MORE by giving them more value.
Plus, by having something to say every day, you demonstrate you really are the expert they can trust.
And, guess what?
Because so many businesses DON’T show up much… you’ll automatically stand out in the inbox.
Another benefit with emailing more is: it’s a filter.
So the people who stick around on your list, are typically more committed to their growth. More ready to take action to reach their goals. And more likely to buy from you when they see you’ve got something that matches their needs.
Fortunately, you don’t need my or anyone else’s permission to start emailing more.
It’s just a matter of making a plan. And doing it.
Although, if you’re showing up more, especially if it’s daily, no one will want to read a long newsletter with a bazillion links and multiple articles.
Who has the time?
But a few hundred words on one topic. With an easy-to-read flow. That takes 2 or 3 minutes to read. Well, that’s going to feel enjoyable to your readers. And less likely to be filed in the dreaded “read later” graveyard.
And isn’t much different to them reading an article on the daily news feed they follow. Or picking up the newspaper to read a column.
If you’re wanting to take steps to build stronger relationships with your email list.
Consider emailing more. And send simple, engaging emails.
