Floopy facts

I came across this in the “State of Email 2023” report from Mailmodo:

“Back in the 1970s and 80s when email marketing became popular, spam filters used to look out for several spammy words to understand which emails were spam and which weren’t.”

After I’d finished belly laughing…

I wondered:

“Who dreams this crap up?”

I mean… how on earth did someone decide email marketing became popular in the 70s and 80s?

Email was only invented in 1971.

Sure, it was used for marketing in the 1980s, but in a very limited way . Simply because the internet had very limited use then. And was confined mainly to military, educational and big business users.

The concept of “spam filters” didn’t come about until the rise of spam — unsolicited commercial email — in the 1990s.

There’s a few flecks of truth in that quote… but most of is a steaming pile of 💩

Sometimes it pays to do a little research when facts and figures are presented.

I mean, you’d expect a reputable email service provider like Mailmodo to get it right.

But even so-called authorities can get it so, so wrong.

So it pays to take a little caution…

… even when you’re reading an email I sent you like this one.

When I’m writing and you’re reading… it’s kinda like I’m sitting in the “authority” chair.

(Of course I like to think of myself as the benevolent dictator of my own email domain 😜)

So when people like me say things like:

“Systeme will help you set up and run your freelancing website quickly and easily”…

Well, you should really do a bit of research to make sure they’ve got their facts straight.

So don’t take my word for it.
