From the depths of the mist it comes…

There’s a fortress of mist around us today.

So much we can barely see our neighbours — a stone’s throw across the creek from us.

WTAF!? 😠

It’s like as soon as we stumbled into March 1st… the switch for summer was slammed off.

(Yep… Southern Hemisphere dweller here)

Now we’re thrown into the middle of autumn (fall).

And it’s jolly chilly today. Even I have socks on. And I’m not usually not a socks-in-the house kind of person.

Certainly NOT in March!

This better not be another “let’s skip autumn and plunge straight into the depths of winter” year.

But…

Groan and grump as I might… these things happen.

And it’s not like I can do much about it… not having access to the weather control-room and all.

We can plan all we like. But surprises like this are sometimes simply outside our control.

It’s why having some wriggle-room as a freelancer can be a godsend.

And you can decide to build that in.

Into project deadlines, for example…

So there’s space for things like the unexpected “we forgot to tell you…” — after you’d badgered your client for everything before starting the project.

And building in buffers can also help you cope with unexpected life stuff.

Those unexpected sicknesses. A digger severing the internet fibre. Or your dog gulping down her beloved chew toy… and you both spending an unexpected afternoon at the vet’s.

And for me today?

In the land of the long white cloud… or should I say: long white mist? [1]

Well.. as long as it hasn’t eminated from the pen of Steven King… we should be OK.

In fact… it’s even lifting a bit since I started typing this.

The only thing that’s likely to reach its claws out…

And make my day take an unexpected turn…

Comes from the mist within my own mind.

Even now I’m being urged to read more about Steven King’s book: The Mist.

Maybe watch the movie trailer.

Or poke around about why the TV series was canned.

No surprises with those flurry of thoughts.

But this potential for distraction doesn’t entice me as much as a it used to.

The thing is:

When I simply sit down to work… clack away on these keys… and the words for an email start flowing out…

The self-doubt monsters have a way of just slinking off. Back into the depths of the mist.

Resistance has suffered another defeat!

If this self-doubt monster is poking and prodding at you…

There’s more info about Resistance in this previous email.

May your pilaf always be savory,
