I’ve been learning a few things from Tony Robbins lately. I’ve not listened to him say much until a couple of weeks ago.
Just today I finished his beginning-of-the-year free event. Which I kinda signed up to on a whim.
But now it’s over… I think it was more than a whim that led me there.
I learned a few things about myself. And have some pondering to do now.
Overall I found it was encouraging. (I’m not at the stage of fanboying though).
One of those reminders he gave was:
“Complexity is the enemy of execution”
You wouldn’t believe how much I came to appreciate this during the last year or so.
I’ll not go into the gory details. But I was overcomplicating left, right, centre, below, above… and any other position I could find to add complexity.
It was good intentioned: for the benefit of my business.
But… reality? In some areas I was trying to build a 100-person business… not a 1 person one.
So, at the end of last year I was on a mission…
Slashing and burning 🗡️🔥
And that’ll continue this year.
The goal is: creating a simple, agile… and ultimately peaceful freelancing business.
I need to keep watch because…
Complexity creeps in from all kinds of places.
For me… the worst is when I watch YouTube videos or do some coursework…
And then have a trillion ideas.
Then I decide that I could write 84 books. Make 33 courses. And launch a podcast, YouTube channel, membership site… and a myriad of other things.
Some of those will materialise.
But my area for growth is: learning to spot what needs to be followed through now.
And the rest I can put on a David Allen-style “Someday/Maybe” list.
(David is the father of the “Getting Things Done” productivity system, by the way)
So… I want to leave that pithy proverb with you:
Complexity is the enemy of execution.
Maybe its something you’ll find useful to dwell on.
Particularly if there’s a few too many spinning plates in your business.
Last word:
Thanks to you who sent me some great questions over the past couple of weeks. Some I’ll answer on the list shortly. But keep ’em coming.
And don’t make them too complex… or I may not be able to execute answering them. 😉
Go well this coming week!
