LinkedIn image magic

I answered a question on Facebook this morning from someone wanting to make changes to their LinkedIn header image.

They were hoping to upload a second picture that would show on top of the main one.

But LinkedIn ain’t no fancy graphics workshop.

So its only options for your banner are: one image. Or: no image.

So, this means getting your hands dirty with some sort of graphics tool.

You could opt to master Photoshop or Affinity Photo…

Or GIMP — if you’re a cheapskate or open-source lover (or both) like me.

I guess you could always could hire someone on Upwork to make the image you want.

Fortunately… there’s plenty of easy-to-use options for freelancers. Many of these have quite powerful free versions.

A favorite is Canva.

I use it because it’s so quick to get stuff done for my business. And easy to whip things up for client emails.

With Canva you simply:

  • Start with its preset LinkedIn Background Photo size.

  • Then drop in your main background image.

  • Add in whatever other images you want on top.

  • Put in text and other things that suit you.

  • Download it.

  • Upload to LinkedIn and…

BAM! Fancy new LinkedIn header image!

While I was replying on Facebook…

I remembered I made a little tutorial video (12 min) about this a year ago. It was for a friend wanting to do a similar sort of thing with their LinkedIn header image. So I was able to share that.

And am sharing it here with you as well. Maybe you’ll find this useful too.

In the video I was more focused on showing how to upload course completion badges. But the principle is the same for anything you want to add to a LinkedIn header image.

The one thing it doesn’t show is uploading the main background image to start with (I just used a plain background color).

But it’s as simple as dropping that image file into Canva… just like the badges.

Perhaps you can use this tidbit of graphics know-how to give your LinkedIn profile a little lift.

Right… I’m off to chainsaw some fallen trees. Hoping to return with limbs intact. Wish me well! 🪚
