My computer died 😭

One minute things were all happy-as-Larry.

Then a message pops up that a reboot was needed to complete a system update.

So I thought: “Time for a break… so might as well restart the computer now.”

Famous last words.

..

I come back to find a black screen. With only the mouse cursor showing.

I wiggle my mouse. The cursor stays glued in place.

Oh… dear! 😢

Then the panic:

… How would I finish my daily email?

… What if I need to do something for my client tomorrow?

… How much is this going to cost?

😭😭😭

Well… no!

The fact is:

I was actually so far from panicking I took my pulse to make sure there was cardiac activity!

Now… it could’ve been been a distraught Chris…

Spraying his anxiety all over the place!

Instead:

I flipped open my laptop. Opened my email. And… picked up where I left off.

This “backup computer” has everything I need. And because my files are in Dropbox…

All the changes are there that I’d made on my desktop computer… right before it gave up the ghost.

It was just ready-to-go!

The main thing I don’t like about the laptop is the much smaller screen than my desktop. (Well, I have 3 screens on my desktop!)

But that’s okay for times like this. It has what I need to keep working. And doesn’t hold me up too much.

Fortunately this all happened on the weekend. So wasn’t causing too much disruption with clients.

But even if it was the middle of the week… and I was busy working on a client project with a deadline looming…

I could just pick things up and keep going.

Might be a tip here in all this 🤔 …

Maybe two…

Having a backup computer can make life less stressful when the inevitable happens!

And… having files in Dropbox or some other cloud storage service can be a godsend!

No need to live in fear… just be a little prepared.

So when the time comes… it’s only a minor pain in the backside.

Avoiding pains in the backside is why I use BerserkerMail for sending email.

And I love to promote it as an affiliate… because there’s plenty more people its low-friction ways can help.

If you’re ready to throw your time-wasting email platform in the bin. Or you’re just starting out. It could be worth checking out.

It’s for people serious about their business… and serious about email marketing.

Oh… I got my computer going again. It only took a complete reinstall!

Ugh! 😒

P.S. Hearing about the boring geeky bits that happened during the last 24-hours would put most people to sleep in about two seconds. And you may only want to read what comes next if you’re on my wavelength with computer stuff…

Let’s just say:

This old-school computer geek did all the things to try and fix this.

Usually this kind of stuff can be backed out. Or copying install files over the top can fix it.

Not this time.

And fortunately it wasn’t a hardware failure.

So it “simply” called for a full reinstall.

And I made it a bit more complicated by deciding to head back to using Windows. So had a bit of fun with getting files from a Linux filesystem over to Windows.

Linux Mint has been AWESOME on so many levels for these past months.

But some of the software that I use, like Zoom, just plays nicer on Windows.

I’ve installed the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). So now have the best of both worlds. And the scripts I wrote to make my life easier… just work!

But the not-so-good-side of being on Windows is: the temptation is back to install Steam and start gaming again.

Resisting… the… urge… gghgh!

..

I reckon reading this is a far better use of time:
