I’m laughing (well… wincing) at an email I wrote a year ago for one of my clients.
Hmmm…
Maybe my clients should stop reading today’s email around about now. 😏
Yes… I have clients on my email list.
Maybe they’re spying on my freelancing shenanigans…
Or just know this is the place to be for awesome tips! 😁
So…
The email in question was for one of those “National Days”.
Y’know… where they pick a day, like October 2nd, and make it “National Ostrich Cuddling Day.” Or something else suitably weird and wacky.
The particular day I wrote about is one that’s significant to many people in my client’s market.
So I’m looking at this email of mine…
And know what?
It’s HAAAWREEBLE!
At least according to my standards today.
I have no less than 3 calls-to-action (CTAs) to different products or places.
There’s my horrendous use of “…” in place of bullets. In 3 sections of the one email, no less!
Plus those stupid titles… that actually break the flow.
It reeks of someone who is trying TOO hard to write an awesome email. When the reality is… there’s 3 emails in there!
And… those poor readers! … wading through the path of treacle I smeared out before them!
That said…
It’s actually vastly better than much of the junk that arrives in my inbox every day! 😲
One thing it DID have going for it… it wasn’t boring to read.
Not-boring means a reader’s attention will be held longer.
And the content itself is great. Just needs a zhuzh up.
Tell you what…
There’s nothing like re-working something good… into something great.
(Am I sounding a bit TOO confident today?!?)
So, I’m about to pinch the content to use as the starting point for this year’s email.
I’ll trim and massage it into something that today’s Chris… who is now 98 emails further down the track with this client… might be happy enough to send.
And I fully expect to look back on this new email, from next April’s vantage point, with a renewed sense of horror! 😝
That’s a good thing (really!)… because it means I’m making progress.
Progress is a MUST as we move forward with our own freelancing businesses.
Writing content, like emails and articles, is an area where keeping on nudging forwards is so valuable.
A way I like to do this, is with the content-creation method I wrote all about in my quick-and-easy-to-read ebook. (Details are here: https://milham.me/easy-content.)
Now it’s time to go and write that email for my client…
And prod those skills just another inch forward.
Onward!
