No!

Everyone who subscribes to my list gets my “welcome” email.

And there’s an open invite to “let me know what the biggest challenge is for you at the moment in your freelancing business.”

Often it’s a bit “all quiet on the Western Front” with replies.

But sometimes, I’ll get a surprise…

And it’s kinda cool having you send me replies. Makes me all 😊.

So… one of my subscribers replied:

1 thing I’m thankful for when it comes to freelancing…sovereignty.

I reserve my right to say no.

Wow!

It’s not something I’ve thought much about amid the hustle and bustle of freelancing life.

But… yes!

One of the greatest freedoms we have as freelancers — we are FREE-lancers after all — is we are sovereign.

This means…

We are monarch over our own business domain.

So we get to call the shots.

And one of those can be saying: “NO!”

  • We don’t have to compromise our ethics.
  • We don’t have to take on things that will overload us.
  • We don’t have to put up with naughty clients.

Although, yes, there may be pressures from needing an income and putting food on the table that can make this quite difficult.

But at the end of the day…

You are the boss of your business.

And I find it incredibly empowering when I’m reminded of that.

Just thinking about that gives me a jolt of energy. And I even want to start taking stuff out of the “Someday/Maybe” folder and get cracking on the next stage of my entrepreneurial dreams.

Yes, I’m talking vaguely. Maybe one day — soon? — I’ll be ready to share.

But for now… remembering that you and I can…

Reserve our right to say “no”.
