Running with scissors

Your parents probably told you not to. Teachers too.

Why do kids do it?

Impatience.

Or:

So much excitement about their project that they want to get started ASAP.

That’s been me this year.

But running with 37 pairs of scissors.

Too many things running around in my brain. Playing endless tug-of-war games with my attention.

So:

2024 is about slowing down. And putting down 36 pairs.

My word for Q1 2024 is “focus”.

I’ve actually started in some small ways a couple of months back. (Just getting a running start).

I trimmed my learning down to focus going deep in a few areas rather than broad in many.

I chopped out client work from the very start of my day. Took my own advice and started giving the first hours to my own projects.

And clipped most of the Netflix out of my life (still enjoy a Seinfeld episode or two).

But I can’t just drop everything at once because I’ve still got a few things to figure out. And some lingering doubts to have a stern conversation with.

Because there’s still scissors involved…

I can reduce the chance of serious injury by slowing down a bit.

I have this tendency to get ideas and just take off at a dash… before even waiting for the starting pistol.

So can end up out of my depth because I don’t have the mastery of skills to keep me afloat.

(Yes, I’m self-aware enough to know I’ve probably overdone it with the metaphors in this email by now… but you know that won’t stop me, right? — hehe)

But now it’s about focusing the focus 🔬

Going slow. Going deep. Going with the voices of masters ringing in my ears…

That’s my theme for 2024.

So I’m looking forward to the trips, falls, and scissor-blade slices that the coming year holds… to leave scars that were totally worth it.

What’s your theme? (Certainly an invitation to reply if you want… I don’t bite — usually)

Bring on 2024!

P.S. Credit where credit is due…

Thanks Barb for the subject line. I’ve been waiting a long time to use that! 😄
