Talk about embarrassing…

I’ve been listening to a lot of French pop music… all in aid of trying to give my abysmal French language skills a boost.

It helps me listen for words I know. And to try and get a better feel for how they’re used.

But one teeny tiny danger with them…

I’m often singing away but not really knowing the meaning of what I’m singing.

Turns out I’ve been singing things that would make even a sailor blush!

You see…

One day I was glancing through the English translation of the song Je Veux Te Voir by Yelle.

The song’s described as a “satirical and provocative critique of a male rapper named Cuizinier.”

But when you have lyrics graphically mocking someone’s — let’s just say — “sexual prowess”…

And I’m singing along in French at the top of my lungs.

Well…

😳

My embarrassed cheeks could have cooked an egg.

Plain and simple ignorance.

And there’s a fair bit of that going around in the marketing world.

You might run across some of it as a freelancer.

Being an “email guy”… it kinda bugs me when you hear people making blanket statements like:

“You shouldn’t email your list more than once or twice a week”.

Sure… they may have tested it for THEIR list. And found something to be “optimal” FOR THEM.

But at the end of the day…

What works for email comes down to: context. And that involves a heap of things.

How did they get people on their list?

Are they just sending constant promotional emails?

How do they nurture their customers?

And that’s just scratching the surface.

There are a heap of things that impact list quality and what works for numbers of emails per week.

Every list is different. And “best practices”… or some guru or other’s advice… can only ever be a guide. Never a hard and fast rule.

So it pays be aware of our own level od ignorance when we think about what might work best for ourselves or our clients.

As well as being aware of the potential ignorance of the people we listen to and learn from.

(Yours truly not excepted.)

Tread carefully or you could be singing your email marketing songs…

Not realising you’re cursing your head off. Or worse.

If you’re ready to start your own email list… and experiment with what works well for YOUR context…
