People often unintentionally screw up because they don’t realize they’re thinking more about their next thing than their current thing. In life, your next thing will tend to go way better if you focus first on not screwing up your current thing. — Merlin Mann
These past two years have been filled with lots of “next things” for me.
Maybe for you too. Or maybe not.
Merlin Mann is on the money though… but it’s taken me a while to see the wisdom in what he says.
It’s all about that “f” word…
Y’know… focus.
But boy is the temptation strong toward new and shiny things.
Things that even have the power to derail our dreams.
Fortunately:
The antidote comes clothed in simplicity: goals.
Goals help keep the focus.
They help us say “no” to the distractions… to the “shortcuts”… to the rush.
I’ve hoarded a mile-high stack of courses and books over the last couple of years. Most which I’ll probably never get around to using properly or even picking up to read.
But I’ve decided it’s actually a good thing.
(There’s that reframing I talked about yesterday.)
You see:
Every time I cast a glance its way… the imposing shadow sends a shiver down my spine. It reminds me of the futility of NOT having goals… and letting distractions delay my journey.
If you find this type of distraction a problem. And especially if it’s derailing your freelancing business…
