If there’s one thing I’ve found that really starts to get me down in this freelance copywriter game….
It’s comparing myself to others.
I’m picking you’ve probably experienced that at times too.
I mean…
It’s so easy to look at other peoples’ success and wonder “why not me?”
Why aren’t the clients banging on my door like they are for them?
Why aren’t I working only 3 hours a day and raking in the cash?
Why? … Why? … Why?
Of course there’s perfectly sensible answers to those questions.
Often it’s because I’m hoping success will simply drop from the sky.
And expecting mastery and the things that come with it to just happen immediately after doing one or two courses.
Reality is…
I’ve not hit my client or money goals (yet)…
But I CAN actually say…
And if you’re like me you can say it too…
I’m succeeding ALREADY because I’m going in the direction of my goals
Even though sometimes it’s glacially slow at times.
Then:
After slapping my own face a few times… I suddently snap back to reality and remember…
Everyone is in different circumstances — so comparison is pretty pointless.
It ends up being a gigantic energy sucker. And because I have that commodity in limited supply…
I’ll only be comparing me and… me.
So:
Have I nudged forward that little more towards my goals?
Am I 1% better today than I was yesterday? (Channelling Atomic Habits author, James Clear here).
And… am I still playing the game?
Yes?
Well, good! …
THAT’s success.
Now I need to bookmark this email… so I can give myself a little pep talk next time I start looking around at others and wondering: “Why aren’t I…?”
To your success! 🍷🍷
