Netflix’s UX writers need a good clip around the ears!

I’ve been watching my way through the TV series Monk.

It’s some light amusement. About a former police officer who helps solve murder cases. But he has near-crippling phobias and obsessive compulsive things going on.

Makes me feel better about my own “quirks.” And it’s a relaxing watch too.

So when I sit down at the end of a long, hard, day at the office…

All I want to do is put up my feet and watch my one hour (or three) of TV.

And what do I get instead?

“Error M7037-1105”

Yer… what?

What in the absolute heck is “Error M7037-1105?”

Have we forgotten it’s 2024 and NOT 1995?

People expect sensible error messages. Not cryptic gobbledygook.

So, after multiple browser refreshes. And checking my Wifi connection was working fine. I resorted to googling.

Turns out the error means there’s some sort of network issue.

Now why on earth didn’t it just say so to begin with?

Perhaps also saying, “Try again in a few minutes,” wouldn’t go amiss.

What a terrible user experience (UX). And shows Netflix isn’t playing as good a UX writing game as it could be.

(Maybe they’re trying to give Klaviyo a run for their money! With bizarre error messages and all. If you missed that email… don’t worry. Just don’t trust error messages at first sight from the email system Klaviyo.)

Just as well there’s no one here on my email list who would EVER think of comitting such a travesty!

You’ve got a tight game when it comes to writing clearly. And persuasively. Right?

You know how important it is for your clients and customers to have a great experience.

Sure, they might take it for granted when you do a solid job.

At least you won’t get the confused looks from delivering your own version of an “Error M7037-1105.”

But, if some skill-building for clear and persuasive writing is on the cards for you… I recommend checking out AWAI’s copywriting course.

Now… just 7 episodes to go! Hope Netflix will come to the party tonight. And NOT leave me hanging (and 👿)!

Have a great weekend!
