I use a text expander to write some common things for me. The one I use is called Beeftext.
Two reasons…
1) Speed
2) Consistency
Example:
All my daily email files are named like…
“2024-05-25 Are you gonna call me lazybones after this.md”
(That’s the filename for this here email you’re reading.)
And having a handy shortcut for throwing the ISO date in there is a-maaazing!
Call me “lazybones” if you like. I don’t care!
Because I like the files named like this so they’re naturally ordered by date when alphabetically sorted.
It also means when I come to write today’s email, I know exactly what the date is without having to look at my computer’s calendar.
Yeah… dates can get a little hazy while enjoying the writer’s paradise of La casa de Milham.
I have a couple of Beeftext key presses that insert the date.
But my favorite is “qdat” … because it’s quick to type when my fingers are on the keyboard.
I can just type q-d-a-t then the name of the email file. And it comes out like…
“2024-05-25 the name of my email file goes here.md”
Neat, no?
And I have shortcuts for other handy things too.
Like email addresses…
backslash-e-c-m gives “chris@chrismilham.com”
And often-used website addresses…
backslash-w-c-m gives “https://chrismilham.com”
backslash-w-m-m gives “https://milham.me”
There’s various tools out there that do this for whatever operating system you use. Google “text expanders.”
But Beeftext, that I use, is Windows-only. It being my operating system of ~~choice~~ necessity.
Plus, it’s free. And open source. 😎
Find it here if it interests you.
Before the caffeine has properly kicked in for the morning… it’s handy having tools like this… so it looks a little less like an overexcited capuchin clocked in for you. 😜
There’s your handy-dandy-tip for today. Enjoy the weekend!
