Although I encourage writing daily email…
Sometimes it makes sense to start with a weekly newsletter.
Perhaps you’re working a 9-5 job and there’s not too much time to publish anything.
Or you want to dip your toes into this email thing.
Although… I’d say, “Dip your toes into daily email!” 😁
Because the worse that you can expect is to become a better writer from the experience. And, if you’re like me, daily email actually helps you stay on track because you develop an emailing habit quickly.
But if you DO want to run with a weekly newsletter. Here’s some thoughts from my experience doing it…
Use a platform that makes things as frictionless for getting it done.
Substack is my first and only suggestion here. Because it makes it VERY easy to start. And very easy to publish.
And is zero cost. Forever… if you never turn on paid subscriptions. (They take a cut of subscriptions if you monetize your Substack that way.)
The hardest part, really, is just writing the content regularly. Oh, and building your list.
And it’s very easy to turn on monetization for your list by using the subscription options.
I’m publishing weekly on Substack here… https://freelancecontours.com
Since setting it up, I’m now spending 30-60mins max a week on it.
Although, it might take a little more to get your own one going if you’re writing from scratch. Reason being, I shave a bit of time off doing it because I repurpose content from my daily emails for my Substack articles.
Substack is also becoming a social media platform in it’s own right. And is easy to promote there with posts. Like on Facebook or LinkedIn.
But it’s gotta be a sustainable thing for you to do.
So I suggest having a clear “why” for why you’re doing it. Know who you’re writing to. Even if that’s yourself.
Also, get a content calendar at least a month ahead going. You can always write in a batch. E.g. spend a few days getting everything done for the month. Then move on to other things.
Best of all when choosing Substack…
You’re building a list of subscribers that you own. 😄
Not every platform that you can publish newsletters on is like that. Instead they own your subscribers.
And if you ever get kicked off… and it does happen for the stupidest, no-recourse, reasons… there goes your list up in smoke.
If you start publishing on Substack. Send me the link. I’ll be interested to take a squiz.
Go well!
P.S. There’s something brewing in the basement of La casa de Milham that I reckon will be kinda handy if you’re thinking of writing daily email.
I’ll share that soon-ish. 😃
