Back in the mists of time, when I first started freelancing…
I thought it was a good idea to overengineer-the-hell out of everything I did.
I mean…
Why use a perfectly good pen and paper? Or a spreadsheet? When a massively complex project management system will do?
I signed up for ClickUp. And set it all up nicely to do fancy automations and whatnot.
Spent countless hours on it. Because I needed to have it running “just right” so my buiness would work smoothly.
But that was all Resistance talking.
Answering just one question was enough to shine a light on this foe:
“Where are all your clients, Chris?”
Yep… learned a LOT since then.
And here I am now… back to using spreadsheets.
And loving it!
I manage my client email calendars using spreadsheets. Even as old-school files on my computer.
They do have some convenience things built in. Like drop-down status options.
But that’s all I need.
They’re fine for planning. Fine for tracking. And no 3rd parties to depend on.
If it breaks, it’s my fault. But I can always access them. Even if I’m offline.
And, know what?
When it comes to my own email. Things are even simpler. Not even a spreadsheet in sight.
Instead, I use this super-complex system:
“Pick one of the million things from my ideas folder that I feel like writing about today.”
Cutting edge stuff, right?
But keeping it simple helps keep my anxiety levels low.
And keepin’ it simple is also what I do with the books I write.
Just one topic at a time. And in an easy-to-digest format.
I kinda write them like I write my daily emails. So if you like reading these, you’re bound to like reading my books.
(Errr… I mean book. There’s only one, for now 😉).
