When freelancing shines…

Ask anyone who’s thinking about freelancing why they want to do it…

You’re almost guaranteed to find “flexibility” near the top of the list.

Although the freelancing lifestyle isn’t without its challenges…

How you manage your time is yours to decide.

(Assuming, of course, you’ve not just exchanged one hamster wheel for another!)

So…

If you like kitesurfing all day…. and doing client work by night. It can work.

If you’re an early-in-the-day person… and wrap up client work by midday. Cool.

There’s any number of ways to organize things to work for you.

Sure…

If you’ve taken on work where you’re asked to be on Slack at specific times…

Or there’s weekly meetings you’re expected at…

Of course you have to factor those in. And be at peace that you’ve said “yes” to them.

For me, the freelancing lifestyle really shines when I have days like today.

The rundown:

  • Up at 6:15am, before everyone else (late for me!)

  • Work for 1.5 hours on my ebook

  • Discovered my wife’s sick. So she won’t be going to work today. (Nurse Chris enters stage left.)

  • Walked to the local supermarket to pick up some bread and fruit

  • My inlaws were passing through our town on their travels back north. So popped in for a couple of hours this morning.

  • Drove my daughter to work just before 11am. So she could have maximum time hanging out with her grandparents.

  • Late morning, I sat down and wrote my email for the day.

(Not this one though. Yesterday’s. Decided to do two in one day today. So I can take time out to care for Vicki tomorrow, if needed. And I’m also feeling a little too hot at the mo… which doesn’t bode well 🤒)

  • Played a computer game for an hour. Hadn’t done that for a while. Nice for a change.

  • Did some bits and pieces of home & personal stuff

  • Now it’s 6:14pm and I’m writing this email.

  • After this I expect to write my tasks for tomorrow. Then probably go watch a movie. Before having an early night.

It helped that today isn’t a “client day”.

Well, I’m my only client today. And that client work got done (the ebook).

So that’s a win!

Tomorrow I have client things to attend to. A few emails to write for them. And some possible projects to look at.

Today’s an out-of-the-ordinary day. But not a stressful one. And pleased I can be there for my family when needed.

I’m thankful for freelancing flexibility 😊

And… know what else makes me thankful?
