Just got back from tennis coaching.
Not mine.
But feeling exhausted from watching my daughter run all around the court whacking the balls.
Was feeling a little old after that.
But then remembered this neat quote I stumbled across the other day.
It’s from the famous Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung. He said:
“Life really does begin at forty. Up until then, you are just doing research.”
Gotta memorize that for the next time my kids call their parents “oldies”!
Now that I’m old and wise (!) I’m starting to agree with what he’s on about.
My forties have been pretty formative.
I feel that I’ve grown so much as a person in just these last few years.
And I’m actually more hopeful and excited about the future than I was when I was younger.
Not that it’s all been plain sailing.
My forties have also been the hardest years of my life.
It’s just that I can process the world better… and know myself more deeply now.
Having all that research behind me certainly helps 😜
And, I have to laugh because…
There’s also a brain blip that goes on when I hear that Jung quote.
It’s like this:
It always makes me remember the song “Life Begins at 40.”
Heard it? (You might wish you hadn’t!)
I remember seeing it on TV when I was 7.
Yer… that’s 40 years ago 😲
I sure hope Jung’s got a good quote for me up his sleeve for my fast-approaching next decade!
Anyhoo… the song was sung by Dave and the Dynamos in 1983.
It’s kinda in the “so bad it’s good” category!
The cheesy-as chorus goes:
Life begins at forty
You wonder why you feel so naughty
You may be getting on, but you can’t stop shaking your feet
Your body sure is willing
Even though your back is killing
You may be forty, but you can’t stop rocking to the beat
Now it’s stuck in my head again. Nooooo!
Anyway… like the Dynamos sing… there’s no need to feel “past it”
And us forty-plussers need to stick together!
There’s plenty of great stuff to enjoy at this more… uhhh… enlightened stage of life.
And I may have learned a thing or two these last few years from starting freelancing in my forties.
Maybe even some wisdom to pass on.
So if you’re feeling a bit stuck with something (or everything!) in your freelancing business…
And you’ve been subscribed to this list for one month or more…

That’s it for today.
If you’re not yet in your REAL “beginning of life” years…
Don’t worry… you’ll get there before you know it. Enjoy the research in the meantime 😉
And for the rest of us oldies…
Enjoy life. And… rock on! 🤘
