Don’t stop believin’

Journey’s hit song, Don’t Stop Believin’, was the best selling digital track from the 20th century.

Just mentioning the song name to people (maybe you too!) will have its anthemic chorus spring straight to mind.

Don’t stop believin’
Hold on to that feelin’

Heh… that’ll now be the anthem for the rest of my day as I annoy my kids by whistling up a storm 🎶

Before his time with the band, Jonathan Cain so often felt disheartened because his music career wasn’t going where he wanted.

Time after time he’d call home and offload.

But his patient dad would simply say:

“Don’t stop believing or you’re done, dude.”

That encouragement kept him going.

When he joined Journey he offered the title and song hook.

And the rest is rock history.

Released in 1981 to become a worldwide hit… and the band’s signature song.

The song follows an uncommon structure with the chorus only appearing at the end of the song.

But I think it’s perfect for the theme of the song.

Because there’s this kind of slogging through the verses. Then come the pre-choruses blips of hope. Before it reaches the payoff.

Perhaps also the perfect musical analogy for freelancing?

Slogging away. Going through the ups and downs. But with consistency, focus, and forward movement towards the goal…

Finally reaching a crescendo.

Also… through their musical dedication… Journey set a great example for freelancers everywhere.

You see…

They were masters of their craft. And when the time came to enter the studio and record… they they knocked the final recording out in one take.

They even did it without their lead singer who had a ghastly cold at the time. He added in his vocals the following week.

So…

Don’t stop believin’!

Sing that epic chorus in your freelancing business.

Become the master. Knock out amazing work for your clients.

You got it!
