So I’m tidying up in the garage. I lift up some bags in the corner and find this MASSIVE pile of dirt and rocks.
What on earth?
Last thing I remember there was a clean floor.
The bags probably slipped down off the shelf a couple of months before. And were hiding the growing pile of rubble.
Where did it come from?
Well, my friend… it seems we had some rather industrious critters living nearby.
And while my family and I were busy just trying to stay warm and dry in the house during winter… and not popping into the garage much… they’d been rather active with their clandestine mining operation.
The signs were there…
The rumblings.
The faint tap, tap, tapping.
Yeah… I jest…
But one sign was definitely there…
The long stretch of concrete…that had been poured over the pipes that ran between the house and the sleepout attached to the garage… had been getting ever so lower than the concrete either side of it.
But because it was a small change… I didn’t “click” it was an issue. Just thought it was kinda expected for a bit of separate concrete like that.
Turns out the rats had managed to dig out their own “Chunnel” between the house and the garage by removing the hard fill around the pipes.
There was a corner of the garage where the concrete base didn’t go to. So they managed to find an opening to eject their diggings from.
Gee I love rats (*ultra sarc*).
Wasn’t much hope of stuffing all the rocks and dirt back in. So best I could do was block the hole.
And made sure to put the rat bait out.
I do take my hat off to these rodents though…
Because they did move a LOT of dirt.
And they did it bit by boring bit… over the course of weeks and months.
Persistent little things.
Might be a lesson here for us freelancers 🤔
