Hey!
Just wanted to share a quick tip I found useful to effectively learn new things from videos.
Could be from YouTube. Or a course you’ve bought. Especially if it’s videos-only — with little or no support material.
This is it:
First time: Listen. Get a feel for it. And the overall message.
It might be where you stop. Because you discover it’s not got material you actually want to dig into. Or you’re just not ready for it at this stage.
That’s cool. Either trash it. Or put aside for a more suitable time.
Second time: Listen. And take notes.
Might involve some pausing along the way, while catching up with notetaking.
Using a voice recorder or voice transcription software could help take notes quicker.
Note down any emerging questions.
Third time: Listen. Take notes on things you missed.
This is for filling gaps. And squeezing the lemon just a bit tighter.
Make plans for implementing relevant things for your business or personal growth.
Seek out answers to questions that arose.
..
I do each step on a different day.
Gives more percolation time for my brain while sleeping. And can come at it again with renewed focus.
If it’s something I really want to sink into my bones… I’ll keep listening regularly.
Some things, like John Carlton’s “Kick-Ass Copywriting Secrets of a Marketing Rebel”, I’ve listened to 10+ times already
But it may be that note-taking and engaging with the material is all you need.
With the pile of stuff on YouTube… for just about any imaginable topic… it means we have to be selective with sources.
Just binge watching through a pile of videos is probably not going to have the ongoing benefits that digging deeply into a few will.
Continuous skill development — like this — is something us freelancers need to stay on top of…
So we can provide the best service for our clients. And remain confident we’re serving them well.
Which reminds me how important the skill of effective writing is. For any business owner.
I’m often writing for things beyond this daily email that are helping my business move forward.
Websites. Sales pages. Books. Course material.
We need to be able to communicate the value we offer… and enable our prospective clients to see how we can help them overcome their problems.
When it comes to doing this in writing having basic copywriting skills can go a long way.
Writing includes videos. Tight, compelling scriptwriting can ramp up their effectiveness.
There’s free ways to gain copywriting skills. With plenty of great videos on YouTube. (But remember the process above!)
Or learn from the industry pros at AWAI for a complete basic training.
The AWAI Method course is designed to give you copywriting confidence through 20 modules — and a marked assignment.
And… if you want to be a copywriter… this is DEFINITELY the place to bolt on your training wheels.
I’ve been through the course. And recommend it as an affiliate. All the details are here:
