In my 32 years of driving I’ve never caused a collision.
Rather proud of that.
But notice… I picked my words carefully.
You see…
During that time I’ve lost a wheel… got stuck hanging over a bank… and been stopped more times by the police than I can count.
But no vehicle to vehicle collisions. 😁
And the police thing… it’s not what you think (honest!).
They just had a penchant for picking on teenagers driving their rustbuckets packed full of friends.
That old Datsun 120Y — affectionately known as the “Green Machine” — well… it helped sing the anthem of my teenage years.
And although I now still get a post-traumatic twinge every time I see a cop car in my rear view mirror…
I wouldn’t have traded the time with my friends for anything.
And I can say the same about the friends I’ve made while freelancing.
Although we’re not pulled over that much…
There’s still been some hairy moments.
And it’s not just Chris unable to afford a haircut for months.
I’m talking about the anxieties of lots of firsts: first clients… first websites… first rejected proposals.
Having a support group to go through things like this with you… is a real godsend.
I appreciate my support groups so much.
My oldest one is like my family.
Like identical siblings birthed into the same strange and scary freelancing world together — we’ve been through a lot.
Maybe you’re already doing it… but if not…
I’d encourage you to connect with other freelancers. And maybe get into small groups that regularly meet.
The antidote to freelancing loneliness is one thing. The extra brain power for your business is another.
To start with it might take a little bit of stepping out and finding people.
Maybe even taking the risk of connecting with someone on LinkedIn or Facebook who you barely know.
Scary… but worth it.
