The red glow of “oops”

A few weeks ago I replaced one of the simmer stats in my electric stove.

Those are the things you twist around with a knob to get the element to the right temperature.

So I wired it all back up. Confident that everything matched the photo I took before I started.

I put the back cover back on. And made sure the earth wire was still securely attached. Because charred Chris on the floor wouldn’t really match the kitchen decor.

Then cranked the knob around to high… and waited.

2-minutes later: nothing.

🤔

So I whipped the back cover off. Had a quick fiddle here. And a fiddle there.

Right… that should do it.

Cover back on. Power on.

In less than a minute the element looked like flowing lava.

“Time to call the fire deparment is it?” Nellie the cat scoffs… as she looks on with disdain from her vantage point on top of the fridge.

But hang on… I’ve just put a new simmer stat in there. And the wires are DEFINITELY connected up right. I triple-checked.

It should be heating up slowly.

While I was pondering…

I absent-mindedly picked up the old simmer stat and tossed it from hand to hand.

And one quick glance at it gave me the 🤦‍♂️ I needed.

In a distracted moment I had picked up the old simmer stat and “newly” installed it.

The thing is… these things look identical. So any idiot can make this mistake.

The first thought I had when I realised this? … “My email list is sure gonna love this story!”

Here’s ANOTHER time where Chris did something utterly stooopid.

Oh well. 🤷‍♂️

I guess it’s why people usually call electricians in to do this kind of stuff for them.

But Ohm-my-gosh… it’s not this son of an electrician’s volt that he’s so ampered up to fix things like this.

(Gunning for lame electrician joke of the year here 😉)

I kinda like DIY. And when it’s the kind that eliminates an eye-watering contractor’s bill… I’m extra-happy.

It’s probably why I like DIY-ing a lot of my freelance business too.

I know it’s not always the most effective time vs money thing…

But sometimes it’s the practical thing to do.

And for me it’s been practical to use Systeme for setting up my websites and the other marketing aspects of my business.

It’s like the DIY-loving freelancer’s dream.
