Diving into the mailbag this week looking for questions and…
Found one! 📧
Although it’s mainly about Upwork… there’s a suggestion I’ve included below for a site to check out if you want to up your proposal-writing game.
Hey Chris, been enjoying your emails.
Question for a future issue: do you use videos on Upwork? Either an introductory video or Loom videos.
I’m jumping into Upwork this week. We’ll see how it goes 🤪
Jim Ping
Thanks Jim! Glad you’re enjoying them.
For over a year I never had a video on my Upwork profile. But maybe a month ago put one up. Can’t say it’s done anything magical (yet?).
But I am a bit on again off again with using Upwork. And consistency is the key. But I’ve got a few things going on.
My current video is pretty rubbish. But at least it gives clients an idea of “me”.
And they can decide there and then if they think I’m their person. It’s a bit shallow. But can save time on both sides.
My recommendation is to do a short intro video. Even if it’s 30 seconds saying who you help.
But doesn’t need to reiterate your entire profile. And do make sure the lighting and sound are as good as you can make it.
I don’t use Loom or anything to send video proposals. Just messages. Then meet in person. I usually record these and share with my clients for reference.
And While I’m on an Upwork roll…
I think I said it in the email… you’ll need a measure of perseverance. But the key is to stand out.
Don’t load everything into your proposals. You want to start a conversation.
So… say awesome things about them. Show your expertise. Ask a question, like “When are you looking at starting?”. And see if they bite.
If you have a few spare dollars … and Upwork is fairly unfamiliar territory … then I recommend Daniel Throssell’s Upwork in One Hour course
Except it’s actually only 1 hr if you play it at 1.5x speed! It’s here: https://persuasivepage.com/upwork
The sales page is worth a read in its own right. And note: it’s only delivered by mobile app. BUT there is a desktop option. There’s a link in the app with info about that.
And also go and sign up for the short email course from Steven Alexander Young.
He’s famous for having a $999 hourly rate (the max Upwork allows) — and people pay it.
I found this exceptionally helpful on the proposal-writing front. Sign up at the bottom of his home page. https://ctactics.com
His proposal-writing stuff is actually really great for anyone approaching clients — on Upwork, LinkedIn, cold email, or wherever.
Thanks for asking the question. You’ve helped me write another email for this week! 😊
Hope that’s helpful!
Keep the questions coming.
Have a great start to the new week!
