I’ve been doing some learning about coaching today. And thinking about how people can make lasting, transformative changes in their lives.
Something I’ve appreciated, and have been reflecting on, is…
You don’t become the person by doing the things. You do the things by becoming the person.
It’s the idea that in order to have the kind of practices and habits that you are wanting to develop, you need to be the kind of person who has those kind of practices.
For example, if you want to go to the gym every week to get fit… you first become the person who prioritizes their health.
They’ll say no to things that will get in the way.
They’ll get enough sleep. Keep junk food out of the house. Have their gym bag ready to go. Circle their training days on the calendar. Find an accountability buddy.
Get the idea?
Is there something you’re wanting to do, and do consistently… but just can’t seem to stick with it?
Could looking at it in this kind of way help you make progress?
I think it did for me when I wanted to email my list every day.
Because, in the same kind of way… if you’re wanting to grow the relationship with your email list by emailing every day… and still be doing it in a year’s time… then you need to become a daily email writer.
A daily email writer will do things like… writing their email early in the day. And always have their eyes peeled for things to add to their ideas list.
You’ll do training on how to write better stories in email. And consider the replies that subscribers send back.
You’ll use editors and email software that make the process as frictionless as possible.
I’m still writing daily email 9 months after I started.
I guess… no… I KNOW… it’s because… I became a daily email writer.
I’m still doing it … not because I have some sort of gift … heck! I’m as average as they come… but because I became the kind of person who is prepared for doing it.
And tools, like BerserkerMail, have certainly made it a whole lot easier to stay on the path.
Perhaps some food for thought there?
