My colon phase

Going back through my past emails fills me with joy. And tears.

I always laugh when I read my first daily email.

No joke… it took me 4-hours to write!

Some of that was taken up by abject fear at saying the wrong thing.

Or thinking I would get a mass-unsubscribe event from my massive list of 8.

Fortunately I’ve shaved my finish time down a bit since then.

So today’s email will take about 30-minutes.

It could actually take MUCH less time. But I still have a lingering compulsion to edit.

(To borrow from Sheldon: “Perfectionism thou art a heartless bitch”)

But 30-minutes a day is not bad in my book for developing a writing habit.

That also happens to offer value to my subscribers. Who also buy stuff from me.

Although there’s joy that even my earliest emails weren’t too bad.

Truth be told, some were plain AWFUL!

Mainly because of my habit of sidetracking.

I still do it now. Sometimes in the flow of the email. But often with a short one sentence side-comment in brackets. (It’s kinda part of my style now. 😉)

But back then, it was like I was writing 3 emails in one!

Because the sidetracks really didn’t keep too well with the main flow of the email.

Then there’s the fun of reading through my emails and spotting the habits that came and went.

At one period of time there were a lot of colons.

There was a “:” on every second line, just about!

Then I read somewhere that colons were a bit abrupt. So I changed to leading every thing in with “…”

So an ellipsis phase, I guess?

But now I’m back to using colons (in moderation) because they are damn useful.

And you CAN have too many “…”s (I’ll sorely admit 😒)

Funny the phases we go through.

3 dots ellipsis.

2 dots colon.

Maybe it’s now time to get to the 1 dot.

I.E. the period…

As in… the end of this starting to ramble tirade of words. 🤣
