One of my influences for daily email, Ben Settle, said in a recent email…
“Figure out and play your game, not mine or anyone else’s.”
Much wisdom is packed into those few words.
And includes… don’t copy anyone. Just be yourself.
Otherwise you’ll be on the treadmill of trying to be someone you’re not…
Or copying what’s working for someone else. Because they’re experiencing “success” … and you want some of that.
But the long game is the one that really pays off.
It’s one reason I love daily email…
Because I can be myself.
I’m just hanging out here. Writing stuff I enjoy writing. Thinking about how I can offer a thing or two you might find useful as you grow your own email list.
Or at least I’m bringing a ray of sunshine into your dark, dank, dismal world. 😜
It’s not about following a rulebook of musts, shoulds, or have-tos.
Or stressing about what to include in a once-a-week newsletter… to make it count… because you only get 52 shots at it a year.
If people connect with what I’m on about… cool! (Welcome along for the ride my dear compadres!)
If they don’t. They’ll find their people elsewhere.
This approach helps the “neediness thermometer” plummet toward zero.
And this applies even beyond your email list.
Take working with clients…
It’s about attracting the right people… who you want to work with. And enjoy working with.
Not trying to be the next hotshot marketer. Or whatever. And busting your guts to impress all and sundry.
Just you do you. They’ll do them. And you’ll have a grand old time.
But, yeah… I know this sort of ideal doesn’t always work when the reality of a zero bank balance bites.
So, “you doing you” might mean including a small helping of you doing what you NEED to do. Right now.
And if that means doing work you’d rather not do…
But you need a way to put the Cheerios on the table…
Then perhaps: do what needs to be done for this season.
But all the while… you’re building your email list.
(And a sharp poke in the ribs if you’re not! 😆)
Even if you’re growing it by one subscriber a week. It’s a start.
And sending email less than daily is OK while you’re getting going… just be consistent.
Everyone has to start somewhere.
But you’re building your asset. So one day you CAN have flexibility to say “no” to clients you don’t want to work with.
Or even ditch client work entirely… and live the daily email lifestyle.
