Like young Cole from The Sixth Sense… who sees dead people everywhere he looks… email ideas are all around us.
A friend stops by with some extra fruit from their tree. That’s an email.
Someone rear-ends you while stopped at the traffic lights. That’s an email.
You prick your finger on a wayward staple. That’s an email.
Those can all be entertaining ways to start. And because they’re stories involving you, they help build the relationship with your audience as they get to know you better.
When you get into the habit, it’s not too hard to take those slice-of-life stories and turn them toward a tip. Or something else useful for your specific audience.
Often it naturally pops up from the story itself.
There’s any number of different “punchlines” for your email, depending on your audience, your business focus, and whatever you like writing about.
Take the friend arriving with extra fruit…
The link could be about the benefits of being generous toward your customers.
Or, if you write about your car being rear-ended…
The punchline could be about being prepared for the unexpected in business. Like having a “f*ck you fund.” (That’s the official name, apparently!)
Worst case, you can pull out the “That reminds me…” line. And move on to what you want to say.
I’ve found email ideas just about everywhere.
In spilled food.
Ladybugs sitting on my window sill.
Being banned from Fiverr.
And inadvertently shaving a strip of hair off my head!
Point is…
Email ideas are EVERYWHERE!
And the more you get into the swing of writing email, the more you’ll become attuned to seeing them.
Collecting those ideas is simply a matter of taking notes when stuff happens.
And you’ll soon realize you don’t need to sit there in a cold sweat, trying to dream up a topic for your email.
Because you’ll have a collection of ideas. And you can just skip through them to find one you want to write about today.
So, don’t let me EVER catch you saying you don’t know what to write your email about!
