The year was 1865.
The place was a middle-eastern town. Part of modern-day Israel.
Half a world away from the Church of the Holy Trinity, Philadelphia. Where Philips Brooks was an Episcopal priest.
As he wandered the streets of Bethlehem. The sights and sounds sank in deep.
On Christmas Eve he visited the Church of the Nativity. Where tradition says it was the place where Jesus was born.
That night he joined in worship. And continued to drink it all in.
Then returned home.
But the whole experience moved him.
So much so… that even two years later it inspired the words for O Little Town of Bethlehem.
Which became one of the most well-loved Christmas hymns.
There’s some beautiful renditions of it.
I like humming or singing along. But prefer it simple. And with a band.
So I enjoy this fun take on it:
Have a great Christmas, my friend!
And enjoy your pumpkin pie… or something else that’s suitably Christmassy and delicious. 🤤
“You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21, The Bible)
