Don’t stop believin’
Hold on to that feelin’
Journey’s hit song, Don’t Stop Believin’, was the best selling digital track from the 20th century.
(Its anthemic chorus is already stuck in my head today… so I’ll be annoying my kids no end as I whistle up a storm 🎶)
Before his time with the band, Jonathan Cain often felt disheartened because his music career wasn’t going where he wanted.
Time after time he’d call home to offload.
But his dad patiently said:
“Don’t stop believing or you’re done, dude.”
That encouragement kept him going.
When he joined Journey he suggested using the title and hook.
The song was released in 1981. Becoming an instant worldwide hit. And the band’s signature song.
The structure is uncommon. With the chorus only appearing at the end of the song.
But I think it’s perfect for the theme of the song.
Because there’s this kind of slogging through the verses.
Then comes the pre-chorus glimmers of hope.
Before it reaches the payoff.
Perhaps the perfect theme song for online business?
A musical analogy of sorts.
Slogging away. Going through the ups and downs.
But with focus, consistency, and action-taking we reach a crescendo.
Journey also set a great example as masters of their craft.
You see…
They walked into the studio and knocked the final recording out in one take!
They even did it without their lead singer, who had a ghastly cold at the time. His vocals were added in a few days later.
So, here’s to 2025 being a year where you’re the master of your business… knocking out hits for the customers you serve.
Whatever comes your way…
