This is dangerous ground I’m about to tread.
Because I might be risking replies with, “But, Chris, you do the same thing!”
And if THAT happens… well…
I’ll be ECSTATIC!
Because it means someone’s actually reading my stuff 😆
And I can make some improvements too.
The thing is…
I’ve been looking through a lot of LinkedIn profiles lately. Belonging to writers of one sort or another.
And it’s ASTOUNDING the number of them which have…
GLARING TYPOS!
Things like plurals that should be singular. Even having their own website address wrong.
Sometimes it’s in the banner image… so it’s the very first thing you see.
And although I don’t aspire to be a grammar Nazi… it does help if you wield the English language reasonably well.
Especially if you’re a WRITER!
Nothing like waving a red flag to potential clients or collaborators… that you’re a writer who either can’t spell. Or who doesn’t spend a little time on attention to detail.
Prospective clients will likely be wondering…
“If they can’t spell their own stuff right… what about when they work on mine?”
I usually tell people if I spot something significant on their profile or website. And I appreciate people giving me a “heads up” if I’ve done something silly myself.
But it’s not too hard to get it right to start with.
So this email is a reminder… and one to me as well… to be a little careful with things like public profiles.
Get a friend to proofread. Read it again yourself on a different day… with fresh eyes.
That extra couple of minutes can make a worthwhile difference.
Now… I’d not get as worried about mistakes in emails. As they do allow a glimmer of humanness to shine through.
But I’m not keen on the tactic that some people follow… of deliberately making a mistake or two just to look more human… and so connect better with your audience.
I’m aware I make my own share of mistakes. Even after I read my email through many times. 😕
Fortunately, when I’m setting up my email to send in BerserkerMail… the spell checker kindly underlines my typos… and the link checker makes sure I’m not sending people straight to a 404 error page.
Just little ways BerserkerMail helps me make less of a fool of myself every day.
