Sitting at my ancient-but-beloved Thinkpad T530 to write an email is practically second nature for me now.
But it’s easy to forget what it was like in the early days.
Where there was a struggle with what to write. How to write it. And “Should I even write this…because who even wants to read it?”
Going even further back, there was the challenge of choosing what email platform to send those emails from.
I started with Klaviyo. Because I was doing ecom emails at the time. And it’s what I knew.
It was awful.
A million clicks to do anything. Even a simple text-only email.
Then I switched to BerserkerMail.
Which has been a joy. And I still use it to this day.
I’ve also had a project, where I was using Kit (formerly ConvertKit).
Which was fun and easy to set up and use.
That brings me to this question from a subscriber:
Hi Chris, Which email provider should I choose to start my email list? ConvertKit or Beehiiv or some other?
I want to start with a free service.
Thanks a ton in advance.
Since I only use and recommend two email platforms, it’s an easy answer from me.
Particularly because price is a factor.
So I suggest: Kit.
Some reasons:
- It’s a popular, easy-to-use platform. With good support, documentation, and free training.
- It comes with generous features on the free ‘Newsletter’ plan. Including up to 10,000 subscribers! (Although automated emails are limited to just 1. So only one ‘welcome’ email can be sent. But it’s a fine place to start for many people.)
- Setting up an opt-in page can be done in half an hour or less (I have a new training in the Toolkit walking through exactly that).
- Email sending is easy enough to get fairly fast at. (Although, is still clunkier than BerserkerMail.)
- There’s plenty of features for tracking growth and sales.
- Anyone who’s keen to start with Kit can sign up in minutes. (That’s an affiliate link, BTW. And it’s fairly easy to get your own link, if promoting Kit to your email list makes sense.)
