Long ago I stopped clinging to the edge of my seat to get the latest juicy info on feature updates for software.
But today I feel a sense of regret for not doing this.
The story goes…
I had this long chunk of audio that I needed transcribed.
And because I’d maxed-out my minutes in the transcription software I usually use…
The thought bubbled up…
“I wonder if Dropbox has some sort of transcription capability now?”
Turns out…
During my last couple years of NOT paying attention…
Sure enough…. Dropbox has added a transcription feature.
So any audio and video I upload can have a text transcription created — automatically.
Which means I’ve now got a free way of getting the text out of any audio or video file I record.
(Well, “free” in that I was already paying for it… so have no extra to pay.)
For emails where I “walk’n’type.” Or screencasts, where I want to reuse bits of what I say (probably for more emails!) it’s perfect.
But there’s ONE reason I’ll still reach for a paid transcription service.
It’s when there’s more than one person speaking.
Like when I’m coaching someone. Or hanging out with my crew on our twice-a-month Zoom call.
In those cases I need the speakers clearly separated out. So the transcript shows who said what.
Because I don’t want to spend ages sifting through to spot the chunks of text I’ve spoken.
Or risk accidentally “borrowing” someone else’s words and claiming them as my own.
I want this kind of transcription so I can quickly chop out what I’ve said. And repurpose that for other things.
One time, I was able to carve out 9 sections from a coaching call. Each on different topics.
They all became content for future emails. Some I’ve written. Some I may write in the future.
So Dropbox’s transcription is great when it’s just me speaking. Like for writing emails.
And will come in very handy when I want to create transcripts for future masterclasses I record.
Repurposing content like this… so it has life beyond its original use… helps maximize what you create.
And saves time and energy.
