I’ve dabbled in a number of languages over the years…
And while I was doing extra dabble-time with French…
I was listening to a lot of French pop music.
All in aid of trying to give my abysmal language skills a boost.
It helps me listen for words I know. And get a better feel for how they’re used.
But one teeny tiny danger with them…
I’m often singing away but not really knowing the meaning of what I’m singing.
Turns out I’ve been singing things that would make a sailor blush!
You see…
One day I was glancing through the English translation of the song Je Veux Te Voir by Yelle.
The song’s described as a “satirical and provocative critique of a male rapper named Cuizinier.”
But when you have lyrics graphically mocking someone’s — let’s just say — “sexual prowess”…
And I’m singing along in French at the top of my lungs.
Well…
😳
My cheeks could have cooked an egg.
The result of plain and simple ignorance.
You can find plenty of that too in the marketing world.
Being an “email guy”… it kinda bugs me when you hear people making blanket statements like…
“You shouldn’t email your list more than once or twice a week”.
Sure… that may be true for THEIR list.
Because they’ve done some testing (they have tested, right?). So they’ve figured that out for themselves.
But at the end of the day…
What works for email comes down to… context.
And that involves a heap of things. Such as…
…How did they get people on their list?
…How do they nurture their customers?
…Are they sending a non-stop barrage of promotional emails?
And that’s just scratching the surface.
There are a heap of things that impact list quality and what works for numbers of emails per week.
Every list is different.
So “best practices”… or some guru or other’s advice… can only ever be a guide. Never a hard-and-fast rule.
It pays be aware of our own level of ignorance when we think about what might work best for ourselves or our clients.
(Yeah… talking to myself too!)
One thing I’m proud NOT to be ignorant about is… the email software I use to send email every single day.
BerserkerMail is bloody awesome! Because it’s so quick to send an email. And is about as close to frictionless as you can get.
